Top Secret Envelope Opened? The Story Continues Below.
So grab a seat. Open the pack. Let’s rewind.
You already held the lunchbox in your hands. You already opened it. You already explored every layer inside it.
And maybe your mind is still spinning with ideas— What can I create with these three blends? What can I reinvent? What rules can I break next?
This page is the deeper layer: the origin story, the creative spine, and the behind-the-scenes look at how the NuStalgia Universe came to be.
Every Universe Has an Origin Story—Here’s Ours
In recent years, nostalgia hasn’t just resurfaced—it has become a defining force across food, fashion, entertainment, and consumer culture. Grocery aisles have welcomed back retro icons like Dunkaroos, Orbitz, Viennetta, and old-label sodas, while fast-food giants have leaned hard into nostalgia with Adult Happy Meals and revived menu items. Beyond food, Y2K and 80s/90s aesthetics have re-emerged in fashion, toy brands like Care Bears, Polly Pocket, and Tamagotchi are back in rotation, and streaming platforms are overflowing with reboots and remakes. Nostalgia isn’t just influencing culture—it’s shaping buying behavior, driving curiosity, and offering comfort and connection in a world that feels increasingly complex.
At the same time, globalization has accelerated flavor exploration in a way the industry has never seen before. Regional cuisines—from the Himalayas to Oaxaca to the Sichuan province—have moved from niche to mainstream, fueled by social media, home-cooking content, immigration waves, and a new generation eager to reclaim and celebrate their heritage. That’s how a once-traditional Szechuan condiment like chili crisp found itself reborn in the U.S. as chili crunch, inspiring retail launches, menu innovation, and full-scale pantry obsession. It became a symbol of this new era: global, local, nostalgic, and brazenly modern all at once.
This cultural convergence—the rise of heritage cooking, the celebration of regional flavors, and the consumer hunger for nostalgia—sparked the idea for the NuStalgia Universe. As R&D and marketing professionals, we recognized how rare it is to simply experiment anymore. Projects move fast. Deadlines are constant. Creativity often takes a backseat to execution. The Spice Girl’s memories of her tin lunchbox, ripping open a fresh pack of Pokémon cards, and flipping through Choose Your Own Adventure books became the guiding spark. If we were returning to the decade of her birth, why not build a universe that honors global flavor evolution while inviting product developers to rediscover the joy of playing with their food?
The NuStalgia Universe became exactly that: a world where a globally beloved condiment could be completely reimagined through the lens of nostalgia, creativity, and modern product development. A space where innovators could explore without pressure, create without rules, and use global inspiration as a springboard for something brand new.
NuStalgia Chili Crunch Innovation Kit
And because every universe needs a mascot, ours came in the form of “Pep-Man”—a chili-pepper Pac-Man–inspired character who became the official icon of the NuStalgia campaign. Playful, fiery, and unmistakably NuStalgia-80s, Pep-Man embodied the spirit of this universe and extended an open invitation to explore. He appeared throughout the campaign as your not-so-silent guide, leading you from card to card, recipe to recipe, and discovery to discovery.
Reimagining Chili Crunch Through Three Global Lenses
America’s culinary identity has always been shaped by the people who arrived here from every corner of the world—each bringing their own traditions, ingredients, and flavor memories. In the post-pandemic landscape, that connection to heritage only deepened. Consumers became more resourceful, more experimental, and more curious about where their food came from. Social platforms turned home kitchens into global classrooms. Recipes traveled instantly, were remixed endlessly, and became sparks for entirely new flavor creations. Services like Ancestry empowered people to rediscover their roots, while restaurants, QSRs, and CPG brands embraced hyper-regionality with unprecedented confidence.
To us, this evolution signaled something bigger: regional flavors weren’t just resurfacing— they were regenerating. They were being reinterpreted, modernized, and woven into a new kind of American flavor narrative. That idea became the framework for our three NuStalgia blends.
And because NuSpice is proudly rooted in New Jersey—home of the diner capital of the world—we leaned into a playful, futuristic diner motif to ground each blend in a moment in time:
All-Day Favorite: NuClassic Chili Crunch Dessert Before Dinner: Mexican Hot Chocolate Crunch Midnight Snack: Flamin’ Pizza Crunch
Three dayparts. Three moods. Three distinct flavor “universes.”
What ties them together is their shared DNA: chili + crunch. From that foundation, each blend branches out into its own global storyline—drawing inspiration from Asia, Mexico, and Italy, respectively.
These seasoning blends aren’t just riffs on chili crunch. They’re modern, balanced, versatile, and strategically nostalgic, designed to move seamlessly across categories, formats, and dayparts without losing their identity. Whether used wet or dry, sweet or savory, each jar is engineered to spark creativity, unlock new applications, and broaden how product developers think about chili crunch as a concept.
Each jar is a flavor universe in itself—ready to be explored.
Inside the NuStalgia Trading Card Pack
Before opening the Top Secret envelope, the NuStalgia Universe guided you to start with the Trading Card Pack—a structured, playful, choose-your-own-adventure introduction to each blend’s wet application, universe lore, and creative intention.
Each card had a specific role and enhanced your journey of discovery
Here’s what every card represented:
Guest Check — Your Entry Ticket to the Universe
This diner-style Guest Check introduces the three seasoning blends featured in the campaign. The back of the card welcomes you into the NuStalgia Universe, explaining that the entire experience was designed for play—not limitation—and includes key market data reinforcing the rise of chili crunch, global flavor exploration, and the consumer shift toward nostalgic innovation.

This card establishes the foundational wet application that inspired the whole campaign and shows how easily the blend transitions into an oil format.
Mixtape Card — Your Cue to Explore Versatility
Designed as “The Spice Girl’s Super Awesome Mixtape,” the front embraces full 80s nostalgia. The back encourages participants to experiment broadly with the blend’s versatility—just like building a mixtape tracklist—while highlighting data on operators already using chili-crunch-style products across menus. This card sets the tone for creative, open-ended flavor exploration.
Dessert Before Dinner: Mexican Hot Chocolate Beverage Recipe Card
The front features the Mexican Hot Chocolate beverage, showcasing the blend’s unexpected sweet application. On the back, a recipe demonstrates how the blend becomes a warm, nostalgic drink with depth, heat, and comfort. This card expands the participant’s mindset beyond savory formats.
Limited Edition Spice Girl Card — A Collectible Easter Egg
The front is a holographic, Pokémon-style baseball card of The Spice Girl mid-swing, while the back lists playful, 80s-themed “stats” that nod to the decade behind the campaign. This card exists purely for enjoyment—a collectible moment that adds character, personality, and retro fun to the experience.
The front showcases the Flamin’ Pizza Marinara, capturing the intensity of the Italian-inspired blend. The back provides the recipe for transforming the blend into a bold marinara sauce. This completes the trio of wet applications and reinforces the blends’ cross-category versatility.
Pep-Man Peel-Off Sticker Card — Nostalgia Meets Industry Insight
Featuring a Garbage Pail Kids–style peel-off sticker of “Pep-Man” on the front, this card leans into playful 80s energy. The back includes logos from restaurant groups that are already incorporating chili-crunch-style products into their menus, blending kid-core nostalgia with real-world market validation.
Flavorbuster Membership Card — Your Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Moment
Designed to look like an old-school Blockbuster membership card, the Flavorbuster card was more than a nostalgic nod—it was your official access badge. The front signaled your entry into the NuStalgia Universe, while the back presented your pivotal decision point: scan the QR code for membership access or open the Top Secret envelope to continue your adventure.
The QR code wasn’t just functional; it served as a bridge between eras—blending retro collector culture with modern interactivity. Scanning it unlocked this universe, page by page, revealing deeper layers of creativity, nostalgia, and flavor exploration.
And the fact that you’re here now? It means you followed the journey exactly as intended—from blend to card pack to Top Secret folder—unlocking each step with curiosity, just like every great Choose Your Own Adventure story. And from here on out, what you choose to make, explore, or discover with these seasoning blends or this kit is truly your own adventure—and we can’t wait to hear what you create next!
Inside the Top Secret Recipe Folder
Once you worked through the trading cards and explored each blend’s wet application, the next step in your NuStalgia journey was waiting inside the lunchbox: the Top Secret Recipe Folder. This was where the full dish concepts lived—your chance to see how each blend could anchor an entire recipe, not just a component.
The All-Day Favorite: NuClassic Chili Crunch Quiche
This recipe showed how the NuClassic Chili Crunch blend could anchor an entire dish rather than simply topping one. The quiche highlighted the blend’s savory, versatile profile and proved how seamlessly it could integrate into a base, enriching eggs, vegetables, and creamy textures with heat, depth, and crunch. It was crafted to demonstrate breakfast-to-dinner usability—true to its “All-Day Favorite” identity—and served as the gateway dish for understanding the blend’s full culinary reach.
This is best enjoyed when topped with the NuClassic Chili Crunch Oil.
Dessert Before Dinner: Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies
This recipe showcased the surprising sweet-side potential of chili crunch–inspired seasoning. Using the Dessert Before Dinner blend, these cookies layered cocoa, spice, warmth, and aroma into a nostalgic dessert format. The recipe demonstrated how the blend’s Mexican hot chocolate cues could play beautifully in baked goods—bridging comfort, heat, and a sense of playful indulgence. It expanded participants’ expectations and pushed them to see chili-inspired blends beyond savory lanes.
This is best paired with a warm Mexican Hot Chocolate for a full sensory experience.
Midnight Snack: Flamin’ Pizza Pull-Apart Bread
Designed to bring the Flamin’ Pizza Crunch blend to life, this recipe leaned into shareability, comfort, and craveability. The pull-apart bread format allowed the seasoning to shine in multiple layers—through the dough, atop the cheese, and in every molten bite. It reinforced the midnight-snack identity with bold flavor, familiar nostalgia, and an irresistibly messy, crowd-pleasing experience. This recipe showed how the blend performs in indulgent formats that beg to be eaten with your hands.
This is best served with the Flamin’ Pizza Marinara Sauce for dipping, drizzling, or drenching.
NuStalgic Treats & Trinkets
1985 was a huge year for candy as Airheads were introduced alongside Sour Patch Kids!
In 1993, Matthew Fenton—then the Assistant Brand Manager for Airheads—was sorting through fan mail when he found a letter from a teenager suggesting a colorless “mystery bar.” When he tested the idea at an elementary school, he discovered that without visual cues (color), only 5% of kids could correctly guess the flavor they were eating. That “aha!” moment confirmed how strongly sight influences flavor perception. The now-iconic White Mystery bar launched later that year. (Fun fact: the flavor is really the overlap of one production run mixing into the next.)
Before they became cultural icons, Sour Patch Kids were actually alien-shaped candies called Mars Men! Born in the ’70s, they didn’t make their big U.S. debut until 1985—after getting a cheeky makeover to ride the Cabbage Patch Kids craze. From space invaders to candy-aisle royalty, they’ve been causing sweet-and-sour chaos ever since.
And of course, no 80s candy lineup is complete without Nerds, introduced in 1983 and instantly embraced by every arcade-hopping, mall-roaming kid of the decade. Their dual-flavor box and tiny, crunchy sugar pebbles were revolutionary—kids shook them like maracas, poured them straight from the box like unhinged gremlins, and traded them at lunch with the same intensity as baseball cards. In 1985, Nerds even won Candy of the Year, solidifying their status as one of the decade’s most iconic pocket-sized treats.
Let’s be real… we’ve all met a Sour Patch Kid, worked with a Nerd, or gone full Airhead on a Monday morning. These candies weren’t just treats—they were personalities. And that’s exactly why we had to include all three.
For this campaign’s lunchbox, we included one piece of each—Sour Patch Kids, Nerds, and Airheads—because nothing unlocks NuStalgia faster than the candy that defined an era.
And because no 80s lunchbox was complete without a little chaos and a few collectibles, we added two more surprises: a mini Rubik’s Cube and a sticker of Pep-Man and The Spice Girl recreating the iconic Dirty Dancing lift. These trinkets were a playful wink to the decade—tiny tokens meant to spark a smile, unlock a memory, and keep the NuStalgia Universe alive long after the candy was gone.
Thanks for journeying through the NuStalgia Universe.
This campaign was created as a reminder that innovation thrives when we allow ourselves to explore, experiment, and—yes—play with our food.
